How to play Consequences
Consequences is the folded-paper classic: everyone writes a piece of a sentence without seeing the others, and the pieces are read out together as one absurd story. Here it's played in the browser over a link: the game deals the questions, keeps the time and puts the sentences together.
How a round goes
- Every player draws a question card: Who? With whom? Where? When? Doing what? If the host added them, What did they say? and How did it end? too. The game gives each player the question they have had least, so over a game everyone gets a turn at each.
- Answer yours before the time runs out: 30, 60 or 90 seconds, as chosen when the game was opened. Nobody sees what the others write. Your answer saves itself as you type; press Done when you have finished, and the round ends early once everyone is done.
- Then the answers come together into a sentence, read together. With more players than questions, a round makes two or three sentences at once.
- Press Ready once you've read them. The next round opens when everyone is ready, or when the time runs out.
The house 🎲
A sentence is never missing a piece. A question nobody drew, an answer left empty when the time ran out, and the answers of a player the host removed are written by the house, from its own list of odd people, places and deeds, and marked with 🎲. A player who joins mid-game gets a card from the next round on.
Someone at the table
When your card asks Who? or With whom?, the players' names appear under the box: a tap writes one in, and you can add to it. The biggest laughs often come from a name everyone at the table knows.
Peaceful or competitive
The peaceful mode keeps no score. Give a heart to the pieces you love, and a reaction if you wish (😂 made me laugh, 🤯 never saw that coming). At the end the piece with the most hearts becomes the Part of the Night, and everyone gets at least one badge.
The competitive mode keeps a score: every round, vote for the funniest piece that isn't yours. You can change your vote until the round's reading is over, and every vote you get is worth 10 points. The standings show at the start of every round, and the podium at the end. The house's pieces take no hearts and no votes.
Badges
At the end, badges go to the table's habits: The Laugh for the most 😂 over all one's pieces, The Surprise for the most 🤯, and Quick Pen for the first to press Done in the most rounds two or more answered. In the peaceful mode the Part of the Night has a badge too, and a player still without one gets the Good Sport. On a tie, a badge goes to whoever joined first.
After the last round
The final page keeps every sentence of the game: read one aloud, or share it as an image. Mix makes a brand new sentence from the game's pieces each time you press it, for one more laugh before the rematch.
How it differs from pen and paper
On paper, everyone writes a line, folds the paper over it and passes it on, and someone unfolds it and reads it out at the end. Here the game deals the questions, keeps the time, fills the gaps and puts the sentences together, so a whole table can play from their phones, even miles apart. The reading and the laughing are still the table's.
